XV408 - McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2 - United Kingdom - Royal Air Force. In 1968, XV408 was one of the first Phantoms delivered to the RAF. She served briefly with No 228 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Coningsby and in June 1969 was allocated to No 6 Squadron, the first operational Phantom unit, for fighter/ground attack duties. She saw further service with the OCU between 1974 and 1976 at which point, with this aircraft type switching to the air defence role, she was transferred to No 23 Squadron. Moves between several squadrons in both the UK and Germany followed until 1992 when she was finally retired. After a year in storage, XV408 became a gate guardian at Cranwell and was later displayed in the open at Halton and Fairford. Faced with being scrapped in 2004, the RAF Museum agreed to take on the aircraft as a gift and offer it on permanent loan.

Macchi C.200 Saetta 359Sa 359 8 01 Macchi C.200 Saetta - Arrow
National origin:- Italy
Role:- Fighter
Manufacturer:- Aeronautica Macchi
First flight:- 24th December 1937
Introduction:- 1939
Retired:- 1947
Primary users:- Regia Aeronautica
Number built:- 1,151 + 2 Prototypes
The Macchi C.200 Saetta (Italian: Arrow), or MC.200, was a World War II fighter aircraft built by Aeronautica Macchi in Italy, and used in various forms throughout the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force). The MC.200 had excellent maneuverability and general flying characteristics left little to be desired. Stability in a high-speed dive was exceptional, but it was underpowered and underarmed in comparison to its contemporaries.
From the time Italy entered war on 10 June 1940, until the armistice of 8 September 1943, the C. 200 flew more operational sorties than any Italian aircraft. The Saetta ranged over Greece, North Africa, Yugoslavia, France, across the Mediterranean and the Soviet Union (where it obtained an excellent kill to loss ratio of 88 to 15). Its very strong all-metal construction and air-cooled engine made the aircraft ideal for ground attack and several units flew it as a fighter-bomber. Over 1,000 were built by the time the war ended.
